New
Instruments Abound
Ophthalmic surgeons may be
in-terested in two new items from Akorn:
- Aspirating Lid Speculums feature
stainless steel wires with micro holes for efficiently aspirating fluid. The
company says the lightweight titanium arms and mechanism offer precise control
while remaining comfortable to the patient and without pulling on the lids.
Rust-proof titanium ensures trouble-free functioning of the mechanism.
Available in temporal or nasal designs.
- Multi-purpose LASIK flap forceps
(M6-600) feature curved, ultra-thin jaws that allow the instrument to be used
as a forceps or a spatula when the jaws are squeezed together. The beveled tips
easily slide under the flap. The company says the lightly textured surface on
the inner jaws securely grasps the flap without trauma, and the rust-free
titanium assures a durable instrument with a permanent burr-free surface. Call
(800) 932-5676 or visit www.akorn.com.
New Instruments from ASICO
Ophthalmic surgeons may want to
check out the following new items from American Surgical Instruments
Corporation (ASICO).
- The company says its Akura PDAK Marker
(AE-2813) marks symmetrical chord lengths of 60, 75, 90 and 105. It marks in
7.5-mm cornea diameter, and partial depth incisions are made at 50 percent of
the depth of the pachymeter reading taken prior to surgery.
- The Trokel Hyperopia Conformer
(AE-2850) is designed for hyperopic LASIK procedures. Its posterior curvature
is formulated to match the hyperopic ablation zone, and the visibility during
the application is increased by the central hole. The conformer, which is
applied to the cornea 15 seconds after LASIK, increases the diameter of the
steeper area and reduces regression.
- ASICO reports that the specially
designed serrated tips of its Ikeda Capsulorhexis Forceps (AE-4389) allow for
better control of the anterior capsule during capsulorhexis. The 23G forceps
are designed for easy entry through side port incision. The forceps
angled tip allows for better visualization of the capsule during the procedure.
The sharp tip may be used as a cystotome, and the round handle provides for
better control. Call (800) 628-2879 or visit www.asico.com.

 Laserex Systems supine version
of the Era 4106 YAG laser features an articulated arm with floor stand,
allowing ease of treatment for pediatric, bed-ridden and wheelchair-confined
patients. Simply swing the laser over the patient, focus and treat. Call (800)

Early
Detection Software
Digital Healthcare Limited of Cambridge and the University of
Aberdeen, both in Great Britain, signed an exclusive agreement for the
development and sale of diabetic retinopathy screening software. The software
is able to detect the very early stages of the disease through advanced imaging
techniques/ algorithms and to rank images according to the number of
microaneurysms present. Digital Healthcare says its technology allows
automatic, routine analysis and assessment of thousands of images. Call Digital
Healthcare at 01223 437407 or visit www.digital-healthcare.com.
